And, for a lot of seniors, Tuesday means McFadden's! For this Senior Night, we figured we'd celebrate at a place that is already really popular with seniors. I swear, the first time I went to McFadden's this year when I FINALLY turned 21 (I'm a young October baby) I was so excited to finally be able to go to McFadden's. It just seems like such a "Senior" thing to do. In honor of our class, we'll have $2 beer and rail specials from 9-12a, (like a really big Happy Hour!), and if you give your gift at the door, you get TWO FREE drink tickets! If you already gave, there'll be a free drink ticket waiting for you, too, as a continued thank you.

See you there!

- Kelley

I really can't believe that Monday morning is our last first day of classes at GW (as undergraduates, at least). This has proven to be such an odd feeling year. Half of the time I'm hyperaware that I'm a senior and it makes me all nostalgic, and nervous, and excited for next year, and the other half of the time I'm so busy I'm completely oblivious to thinking about it all and something will randomly hit me that bring back all the senior feelings again. Starting Monday, this semester is going to be a series of lasts for us - our last first day of classes, last Spring Break, last mid-terms (not complaining about that one), and tons more. So, to help you survive the emotional rollercoaster, we figured we'd help you start Monday out right with free breakfast at Senior Breakfast, Monday (Jan 11), from 9-11am at Alumni House. I've had experiences at GW that I could not have had anywhere else in college, as I'm sure all the seniors have had. I gave to the 2010 Senior Class gift because I wanted to show my gratitude for all of the opportunities GW has given me. By donating, I know I am improving the University for a future GW student.

I chose to divide my donation between 14th Grade Players, one of the student theater companies I've acted with, and my community service sorority, Epsilon Sigma Alpha. Having been involved with these organizations for some time now, I know how far even the smallest donation can go. I was happy that the senior class gift allowed me to direct my donation towards two groups that have helped define my experience at GW. Additionally, I am thankful for the Luther Rice Society's pledge to match the senior gift contributions. We've all pulled an all-nighter or two in Gelman and know that as the University grows, our library needs to grow as well. The Class of 2010 Gelman Library Fund is a worthy cause that will have a tangible impact on future GW students.

To those who may be on the fence about donating, I urge you to really think about what this University has given you--a reputable degree, the DC experience, that amazing internship, leadership roles in your student organization, your favorite class, your best friend, your roommates, the list goes on and on. Any donation, no matter how small, can make a difference. Your parents have given you the means to go to GW, but donating to the senior class gift is your chance and your decision to give back to an area of GW that has been meaningful to you.

You know what to do: seniorclass@gwu.edu.

Happy Holidays! If for whatever reason I can not give my 100% to something, I have plenty of women who are there to help and support me in being my best. They uplift, nurture, and aid me whenever necessary. It was nothing less than inspiring. The Luther Rice Society Advisory Council (the ones who are matching our class's gifts) and the GW Alumni Association Board, met together on Saturday to talk about the state of the two organizations, the direction of the university at large, and ways to improve alumni engagement and giving to help reach those goals.

Coordinating this year's senior campaign, and working in Development, I learned a long time ago the importance and prevalence of alumni giving and being passionate about the university, but to see it in action was something else. During the first half of the meetings, I sat next to an alum who graduated from GW in 1958 and has been giving and staying involved ever since he graduated. I asked why, and he said because it was the right thing to do and he wanted to help the students that came after him. Simple as that. I asked him if he was involved in things when he was here and he said no. He got his degree from the night school, he said, so he would drive to campus to go to class and return right back home afterward, but the gratitude he felt to his alma mater was still strong.

All the people I met over the weekend wanted to ask me questions about what's going on on campus, how they can help current students and about what current students wanted most from the university. Then, after a full day of meeting from 8:30am-4:30pm, they were excited to mingle and network with seniors until 6:30.

Their dedication to GW really put into a broader perspective for me why giving our senior gifts is so important. These alumni give thousands of dollars to a school they haven't attended in years for our benefit. It makes it seem completely reasonable, then, that we can give a far smaller amount to a student org or scholarships that affect us right now.

(In response to "The real senior class gift" in today's Hatchet)

This morning I was saddened to see Josh Akman's column about the Senior Class Gift in the Hatchet. Not sad because he criticized the campaign I'm coordinating, but sad because of the story he told about the encounter with the homeless woman, and sad because he can’t see how through giving to the Senior Class Gift Campaign, you can give to charitable and service organizations, and make a huge impact in our community.

Many of us came to GW because of its relationship with the city. And, many of us were shocked when we got here by the prevalence of homelessness, poverty and crime that exist just blocks from campus, and sadly, sometimes ON campus. Instead of confining ourselves to our rooms and ignoring the issues in our own backyard, GW students take action everyday to help better the city GW calls home. One of the defining characteristics that makes me so proud to call myself a GW student is our collective commitment to service. In our years here, we've participated in programs like Freshman Day of Service, Jumpstart, Heads Up, MLK Day of Service, service sororities and fraternities, Kidsfest (just this past Saturday), and took advantage of tons of other opportunities to get out into the city and make a difference. The Senior Class Gift is just one more way that we can support these initiatives and help GW students have the opportunities to affect change in our DC and global community.

When you give to the Senior Class Gift, you have the power to direct your gift to any part of the university you desire, so please give to what makes a difference.

Give to OCS to help secure financial resources to continue supporting service opportunities for GW students.

Give to SAC so that students can have the resources to create student organizations based in community service.

Give to your Greek chapter to help support its community philanthropy.

Give your school to support work in the classrooms, giving GW students the skills to go out in the world and make it a better place.

All gifts given by seniors will be matched, dollar for dollar, by the Luther Rice Society Advisory Council alumni, and those match dollars will create the Class of 2010 Gelman Library Fund.

By giving to the programs that fight to fix the social issues in our city, nation, and world, and supporting the students who will soon become the leaders in these causes, you can provide community change and support GW at the same time. The Senior Class Gift Committee, made up of over 40 diverse seniors, considered all of the suggestions and below are the 4 final options the class as a whole will vote on on Wednesday:

Class of 2010 Gelman Library Renovation Fund - In our four years of studying here, we've all noticed things in Gelman that could be improved, so let's help them do it for future students! This fund would help support the Gelman Library's upcoming renovations of the student study spaces.

Class of 2010 Smith Center Renovation Fund - The Smith Center has been the hub of GW Spirit during our 4 years here, and with your help, future Colonials fans will have a better venue to cheer in for our athletics teams. This fund would help support the large-scale Smith Center renovations and increase GW spirit!

Class of 2010 New Student Organization Fund - With over 450 student orgs at GW, almost all of us have been members of an organization or attended student org based events. This fund would help provide funding to sustain new student organizations for years to come.

Class of 2010 Senior Spirit Fund - As we're starting to see in our first months of senior year, it's a year that's full of great events to celebrate our time at the University, and help get us through the stress of senior year. This fund would help support events targeted to seniors for classes to come as a way to increase their class pride, and help them have as great of a time as we will our senior year!

Remember!

This year, our class gift has two parts: First, seniors can give to any part of the university they choose - your favorite sports team, student organization, school, or scholarships and financial aid - you decide! Then, as the second part, the Luther Rice Society Advisory Council will match the amount of money given by the class, and those matching dollars will cover the cost of a tangible gift that we'll vote on this Wednesday, October 21.

For more info, or to give, visit our website at seniorclass.gwu.edu.

Today's post was written by our first senior guest blogger, Jen Sansone, a double major in Psych and Dance from Westford, MA. Check out what she has to say about how her senior year is going and leave a comment to let us know what you think!

Hey 2010!

I hope you are showing those midterms who's boss and aspiring to get "perfect scores". While you may be busy studying for midterms, the LSAT/GRE/GMAT/MCAT or some other test, you should take some time to reflect on your college experience thus far.

I don't know about you, but to me, this school year is FLYING by without me even taking the time to realize it. My older friends and parents provided me with the piece of advice "take each day at a time" going into Senior year, and I have been attempting valiantly to do just that. However, in the midst of my efforts at this task I have found zero time to sit back and reflect on the fun I've had these past three years at GW.

In order to move forward with Senior Year, I have come to the conclusion that I must reflect- thinking back on different events I've attended, the great friends I've made, and the experiences we've shared is the fuel I need to help me power through the rest of the Fall semester. I'm not saying I want the rest of this school year to fly by, I just need positive thoughts to give me the energy to persevere through the tough school work and other tasks so I can fully commit myself to enjoying the rest of my time at GW. Freshman year seemed to go by just as fast as this year is going, however I had much more fun. How will I be able to channel that level of fun again to enjoy my senior year?

Being a Senior does not mean we have to fully feel the passing of time every day; Instead, we should think about the past to appreciate the present, and to motivate us for the future.

What are some past experiences you've had at GW that will be your "fuel" for enjoying Senior Year? Leave your comments and feedback and enjoy the rest of your week!

GW SPIRIT WEEK 2009
Are you BUFF enough?!

MONDAY, OCTOBER 12

Spirit on Kogan
12:00-2:00pm, Kogan Plaza

PB Film Series: The Hangover
8:00pm, Continental Ballroom
Sponsored by Program Board

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13

Spirit on Kogan
12:00-2:00pm, Kogan Plaza

GW Trivia Challenge
8:00pm, G-Dub Java Lounge
Think you know GW? Being a senior myself, I know how busy we are and how hard is it to remember to go online and vote for something, regardless of how many emails I get about it or how many windows in Phillips are postered up about it. I am, however, glued to my phone 24/7. Unfortunate? Maybe. But, I bet the majority of you are just as addicted to texting as I am. Either way, we figured that we'd make technology work for us and bring voting straight to you - via text messaging.

So all you have to do is this: text GW2010 to 30364 to become eligible to vote. Voting will be on October 21, so make sure you do it before then! Don't worry, we will NOT blow up your phone with spam text messages. You'll only get text messages about voting and occasional info about senior events. So actually, why not just do it now so you won't forget? I bet your phone's within arm's reach (especially if you're in class).

Once you text in, you're all set! On the day of voting we'll send you a text with the gift options and you can text back your choice. It's that easy.

Perfect, right?
